Although David Bowie helped to rebirth rock-and-roll as a space-y, gender-bending scene where all freaks were welcome, in his early career Bowie often considered himself more songwriter than performer—and that’s the origin of “All the Young Dudes”, one of the most explosive generational rock hooks handed off to Mott the Hoople. The ultimate glam-rock hymn, “Dudes” announced the arrival of a new era in pop via a Lou Reed-ish cast of characters—cross-dressers, boogaloo dudes, speed freaks—and a timely, remarkably cocky dismissal of the past. By the fall of 2018, Ariana Grande had broken off her engagement to Pete Davidson and mourned the passing of ex-boyfriend Mac Miller. “thank u, next” was her response, and as she croons angelically atop a woozy bassline and a collage of percolating beats, Grande reminds the masses that we choose to love people for a reason and we can be grateful for what we learned from them. Lyricist Bernie Taupin wrote this song about his first wife, Maxine Feibelman, who really was a seamstress for Elton John's band and obviously did marry a music man. It flopped when it was first released as a single in the US, but this track has since become one of Elton’s best-loved songs and was given new life after featuring in Cameron Crowe’s 2000 film Almost Famous. “Tiny Dancer” is beyond analysis: A little bit of Taupin’s storytelling, a dash of country twang, and that signature Elton John piano all add up to an anthemic tune that is weirdly ubiquitous in popular culture. Perhaps the affecting depiction of ‘70s free-spirited California girls speaks to our boundless yearning for freedom.

Bruce Springsteen sang about driving down the highway, but with “Born to Be Wild,” Steppenwolf roared down the highway, their chrome-plated Harley rumbling out “heavy metal thunder.” Thus, in a stroke, they invented a name for a new, stomping, high-volume genre and created an anthem that’s still synonymous with hitting the open road.
